Towards a circular economy

The circular economic model is a crucial key to a prosperous and resilient economy. Accordingly, our country must, by 2030 and within a European framework, consolidate and implement Belgian industry’s position as a leader in the circular economy.

Belgium is already considered a pioneer, but we cannot rest on our laurels. As the largest employers’ organisation in the country, our mission is to continue to support and guide the Belgian business community towards a sustainable economy – and to strive for a policy framework that not only makes the transition possible, but also encourages and promotes it.

Our vision dovetails with the principles underlying the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and aims to maximise value creation through lower emissions of greenhouse gases, the availability of alternative fuels, the sustainable use of (scarce) raw materials and less use of materials. In addition to the environmental benefits, there are also economic benefits. Circular entrepreneurship enhances competitiveness and contributes to innovation, growth, job creation and prosperity. Ultimately, the end consumer benefits from attractive, high-quality and sustainable products and services.

Developing a circular business model is a long-term endeavour and the transformation from a linear to a circular model requires major investments. The return on investment can be significant, provided we maximally export and market our circular economy expertise.

The circular economy is the driver of economic growth which not only respects our planet, but is resistant to current and future economic and social challenges.
