Energy transition: the right mix at the right time

FEB firmly believes that the transition to sustainable energy generation and consumption is necessary in the fight against climate change. At the same time, the energy transition can provide a competitive edge for companies and reduce energy costs (including for citizens). However, this effort must be made in a balanced manner within feasible timeframes and without jeopardising security of supply, energy availability, a responsible, inclusive and competitive energy price and our climate ambitions.

To address price, climate and supply challenges, our country must take a technologically neutral approach. To put it plainly, we must consider all available options, such as nuclear energy (both through the extension of existing reactors and through the development of new small modular reactors, SMRs), biofuels, hydrogen and its derivatives, and CO2 capture.

Innovation is the driving force for deploying the energy transition. A favourable and encouraging investment climate is fundamentally important in terms of making it possible to invest massively in infrastructure, in both proven technologies (such as insulation) and new technology (such as flexible, decentralised energy generation and distribution), as well as in research and development. Belgian companies must be given the opportunities and freedom to develop and export new solutions for a sustainable, climate-neutral world.
